Recuperation recycles the energy normally lost during braking by storing and then using it for acceleration or starting, so saving fuel and cutting emissions.

When you're trying to save energy while driving it makes sense to recover it where you can. One way we've done this is to raise the alternator voltage when slowing down and braking. This increases battery charging and helps the car slow down. The alternator load is then reduced when accelerating to lighten the burden on the engine and cut fuel consumption. Recuperation is a feature of some of our BlueMotion cars.

Coveted automotive prize awarded at the Geneva International Motor Show

Geneva, March 2, 2015 – The winner “Car of the Year” award 2015 is traditionally the first announcement made at the Geneva International Motor Show. The deciding vote was counted live in the presence of the international press representatives in Geneva this afternoon. 58 car journalists from 22 European countries submitted their votes and selected Volkswagen Passat as the winner of the “Car of the Year” award 2015. VW Passat beat six competitors in intense test drives and convinced the judging panel in the final selection for the world’s most renowned and sought after automotive award. The candidates that made it into the final selection included BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, Citroën C4 Cactus, Ford Mondeo, Mercedes-Benz C Class, Nissan Qashqai, Renault Twingo and Volkswagen Passat.

Hakan Matson, chair of the judging panel and car expert at the Swedish business newspaper Dagens Industri explained the judging panel’s reasons: "It is truly impressive that Volkswagen managed to win the title for the third time in six years. The Passat has many strong points, including its design, overall quality, safety, spacious interior, and several useful innovations such as the Trailer Assist. With all these features the model clearly deserves to be Car of the Year 2015."

In addition to innovation and safety, decisive criteria for the title “Car of the Year“ include design and value for money.

McPherson strut suspension is a particular form of independent suspension used on the front axle of a car. The McPherson strut joins the wheel carrier to the car body. The functions of the suspension strut are to cushion the car, to limit bounce (tension and compression), to damp oscillation, to hold the suspension strut mount connecting to the body, and to transmit the steering motion. The use of lightweight, high-strength materials reduces the unsprung masses, thereby enhancing performance and ride comfort. The benefits of this system are its space and weight-saving design allied to its large amounts of compression.

Plenty of room for big plans — as well as space for up to seven people to put these plans into practice: The new Touran combines the numerous benefits that made the predecessor model so successful with cutting-edge engine technology and an extensive range of assistance and infotainment systems. In total, more than 50 innovations are waiting to be discovered and experienced. At the world premiere held on 24/02/2015 in Wolfsburg, Germany, trade professionals were delighted to see that the design of the new model has also been enhanced: Seamless glass surfaces amplify the generous sense of space, while the roof line—which slopes towards the rear—gives the vehicle a confident, dynamic look.
Despite its compact dimensions and sportier appearance, the latest generation of the Touran has lost none of its versatility and offers a great deal of space for all activities you wish to use the vehicle for. The new Touran is a true seven seater, meaning it doesn’t matter whether a gang of little rascals are looking to use your car for a hideout or whether you fancy taking to the road with six friends — all passengers can enjoy their own full-size seat. Moreover, seats in the second and third row are equipped with "ISOFIX anchor points" as standard, and a seat belt fastening detection system is used to monitor all seats. The successful spatial concept also ensures that there is enough head and leg room for passengers even in the third row of seats.
So that you can approach every journey with the necessary calm, the new Touran offers a multitude of features to make everyday life easier. Luggage can be stowed away extremely quickly using the optional "Easy Open" function in the new Touran — even when you don’t have a free hand: A simple foot movement underneath the rear of the vehicle is all it takes to unlock and open the boot, which boasts a capacity of 633 litres when the third row of seats are folded down. Passengers can relax while listening to the "Composition Media" radio fitted as standard or one of the optional navigation systems, plus the optional "Car-Net App Connect" function represents one of the most fascinating networking options around. This system allows you to use a whole host of apps that exchange data between the new Touran and your smartphone in order to open up new functions — from practical and informative to entertaining and amusing, there will be a feature to discover that meets your needs. Share in the excitement for the new Touran. After all, family is a tough job — enjoy it.

The new Touran comes to the UK at the end of 2015
